Cold Weather and our Outside Neighbors

When I got back home after dropping of Logan at daycare, I looked out on to our deck, and I saw “Sarah”, our red/orange tingled squirrel that the kids name a couple of years ago.

Not sure why “she” has that coloring, especially considering all the other gray squirrels, but it does make “her” easier to identify, plus “she” is a little bit smaller than the rest of the “gang” that inhabits our backyard which filled with Black Walnut trees.

Seeing her today, reminded me of my chores for our outside friends at this time of year, and hence the reason for this blog post.

Here is a list of some simple things to help out our furry outside neighbors:

  • Fresh Water – At this time of the year, unless you are near running water, the birds and squirrels that are still running and flying around still need water. So please take a moment and fill a container with water so they have something to drink. You will have to change it in the morning, but it is a great way to get kids thinking about nature.
  • Bread Crusts – Madison does not like the crust on her bread (yet), so we have a little container next to the cutting board to collect the what is cut off, and those scraps are then later put on the deck.
  • Pop-Tart Edges – Don’t know why, but the kids do not like them either, but the squirrels do!I have not figured out what their favorite flavor is, but I have watched one of our squirrels trying to get a long piece through the railing on the porch. Very entertaining! (Think of a dog with a long stick, trying to get through a fence door…)
  • Stale Snacks – These can take on many forms, cereal, pretzels, cheese balls, cheese curls, pop corn, french fries, you name it! You may not like it, but our furry friends do not seem to care, especially the crows! (Ever notice what the crows eat on “Trash Day”?)”Crow Salad“/”Critter Granola” – Trying mixing a bunch of items together! It my look gross to you, but trust me, our friends will not care!
  • Kitty TV – This is more for our indoor animals, but our two cats. Jessica and Joy, love to sit/lay on the couch and watch their outdoor friends as they eat!

These are just a few thoughts and suggestions, and I hope I will hear some more from my readers!

Confessing my Addictions…

To All my Friends and Readers –

According to the “experts”, the first thing I need to do, is to admit to my addictions.

So, with your help, I am admitting to the world via my Blog and Facebook, I have two addictions that I am trying in desperation to “kick”, and I am looking for your support.

I’m not sure when it started, but I have tried very hard to remove these items from my life, and it has been difficult.

How did I get myself into this mess?!

Some would say, it comes with the profession…

All ways being out there…

But now, all I can think about is the time and money that I spent…

How will my wife and kids forgive me.

I tried to keep “it” out of sight… in my office… after they went to bed… in the middle of the night…

But I was just drawn into “it”…

“It” was all around me…

Then about 3 weeks ago, I had enough of “it”.

So far, the withdrawal symptoms have not been as bad as I thought…

‘One day at a time’

For the most part, I have been able to ignore the lure of “it”, but today, about an hour ago, I looked at one…

I stopped myself, and started this public confession, and maybe, I can finally “kick” this!

Started to Google for some answers, and did you know, it is not easy to find information on “How to sell your Farm or Café on Facebook?” or “How to quit your Farmville or Café on Facebook?”!

Tons of places for Cheats, but little useful info on Selling or Quitting.

So as I ask your help here:

– How does one Sell their Farm or Café on Facebook?
– How does one Quit their Farm or Café on Facebook?

If anyone has an Idea, PLEASE let me know!

Google Wave

Off the top of my head, I do not remember how I found this, but after watching the Google Wave Developer Preview at Google I/O 2009 video, I signed up for an account, and now I am hooked!

If you have not watched the video, and are still wondering what Google Wave is about, well, imagine being able to “mash” together eMail, IM and Blogging all together in one location/interface!

If Google can pull this off, than folks like eRoom, Lotus Notes, Twitter, Facebook and MySpace are going to have to start to rethink their apps.

I have already started to use it for a Business Project and have seen the benefits of an Open-Real-Time collaboration environment!

One of the main objectives of Wave is to be an Open Source environment that anyone can setup and use.

Bottom line… Keep and eye on this!

Windows 2008 Server – Core

For a project that I am working on, I have just started working with W2K8 Core, which is administrated via the Command Line, and NOT for the faint of heart.

The following “notes” are being shared during my adventure:

  • How to recover a “Lost” command window

I was REALLY surprised with difficult it was to find a quick answer to this is, either via Google or on Microsoft, but I finally found “it”…

To recover, you can press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, click Start > Task Manager, click File, click Run, and type cmd.exe.
Alternatively, you can log off and log back on again.

– The Log "Off and On" did NOT work for me.

Update –

Since my original post to Facebook, some folks have reported some issues…

The biggest issue that I see is that Facebook has by default, made “your” information (Wall Posts, Links, etc.) visible to the Whole World!

And there is a reason for this… Facebook wants to and needs to make money, but the question is how.

There had been talk about making FB a Paid services, but that seems to have been shoot down…

SAY NO TO FACEBOOK BECOMING A PAYSITE

But apparently, 2.6 million FB Fans said no…

Basically, it is about the data… What you post… Who you “talk” to… Where you go… etc.

Google does it and so do most Search Engines… as the blog also points out, it keeps Twitter at bay…
Anyhow…

There is one note of caution, the Screen shoot of the FB settings is INVENTED and is posted as a suggestion to management at Facebook. (I too did NOT read carefully… D’oh!)
